February has been one of those months where progress, challenges and a bit of perspective all arrived at once. Hospitality rarely allows things to tick along quietly for long, and this month was a reminder of that.
A new chapter for The Suffolk Hotel
This month saw the opening of Tiger Fusion, our new Asian-inspired restaurant at The Suffolk Hotel. It marks the first stage of a full ground floor renovation of the venue.
Hospitality is a sector that constantly evolves, and the current climate means standing still simply isn’t an option. Rather than waiting for things to improve, we’ve chosen to keep investing, adapting and moving forward.
Tiger Fusion is just the start. The next stage will see the old bar area transformed into a larger events space available for hire.
Waiting for the “right time” to make changes in hospitality can mean waiting forever. Sometimes you have to make the decision and commit to moving forward.
Behind the microphone
This month I also recorded my first podcast appearance.
Chris Grimes, who hosts The Good Listening Show and has interviewed guests including Rob Brydon, Christopher Biggins, Ross King MBE and Roger Black OBE, invited myself, James and Rebecca to share the story behind how we built our businesses and what it’s like working with family.
It was a fascinating conversation and a great reminder that opportunities often come from the relationships you build along the way.
Sometimes the best opportunities come not from chasing work, but from the connections you’ve made and the value you’ve given over time.
When the systems have to step up
February also reminded me of something every business owner experiences at some point…being forced to slow down.
In my case it was a bout of what can only be described as proper man flu. First the cold, then the cough, and it knocked me for six.
Anyone who runs a business knows that feeling of frustration when you’re not operating at full capacity.
The upside was seeing the systems we’ve built across the businesses doing exactly what they’re supposed to do.
If a business can’t function without you for a few days, then you don’t really own a business — you own a job.
Investing in the future
Finance has also been a big theme this year.
Across the businesses we’ve invested heavily, including around £60k in new gym equipment and £25k on the restaurant refurbishment, with more work continuing across the sites.
Borrowing money in business sometimes gets a bad reputation, but debt in itself isn’t the problem.
The key is understanding why you’re borrowing.
Borrowing to plug gaps in a struggling business can be dangerous. Borrowing to invest in growth, improvement and future opportunities can be a very different story.
As we move into March there are still plenty of projects underway across the businesses. The exciting thing about hospitality is that there is always something new taking shape — another idea, another improvement, another step forward.
The refurbishment work at The Suffolk Hotel continues, there are developments underway at the spa, and across the group there are plenty of plans already being worked on behind the scenes.
That’s the nature of hospitality. You’re never really “finished” — you’re always building the next chapter.
Remember, hospitality NEVER stands still, and neither can we.
Dan.
