May was a month that reminded me why you keep going even when the results aren’t coming quickly enough.
In business and in football, as it turns out.
22 years in the making
Arsenal won the Premier League title for the first time in 22 years.
I’ll be honest — it was emotional. Not just because I’m a fan, but because of what it represents.
22 years is a long time to wait. There were seasons of frustration, near misses, managers who didn’t quite get it and plenty of moments where it felt like it might never happen. But the club kept building. Kept investing in the right people, the right structure, the right culture. And eventually, it paid off.
That’s not a bad blueprint for business.
The owners who tend to struggle are the ones looking for the quick fix — the single decision that turns everything around overnight. The ones who build something lasting are usually the ones with a clear plan, the patience to see it through and the resilience to keep going when it’s not happening as fast as they’d like.
Persistence and a plan. It really is that simple. And that hard.
Budapest
As if the title wasn’t enough, I was fortunate enough to be at the Champions League final in Budapest.
Myself, some great friends and my son-in-law made a weekend of it. The result didn’t go our way, but that barely mattered. It was one of those occasions where the experience, the city and the company made it something I’ll remember for a long time.
There’s something worth saying here about making time for moments like that.
You can always find a reason not to go. There’s always something happening in the business, always something that needs attention. But the moments you make the effort for — the ones you share with the people who matter — are the ones that stay with you.
Tiger Fusion — the finished article
On the business side, May saw us essentially complete the refurbishment of the restaurant and cocktail lounge at Tiger Fusion.
Investment in your product isn’t optional if you want to stay relevant. We made a decision to keep moving forward, keep improving and keep giving guests a reason to choose us. The finished result speaks for itself and it sets us up well for the months ahead.
It’s easy to delay investment when costs are high and uncertainty is in the air. But the businesses that come out strongest are usually the ones that didn’t stop improving when everyone else did.
The 90 minutes that changes everything
One thing I get asked about regularly is how I manage to stay across everything while also having the freedom to step away.
The honest answer is the 90 minutes I do every single day working on the business — not in it.
That time is non-negotiable. It’s where the thinking happens, the planning, the review of what’s working and what isn’t. It’s where the business gets my best attention rather than my most reactive attention.
It won’t look the same for everyone. But if you’re serious about building something that doesn’t rely entirely on you being present every hour of the day, you have to carve out the time to actually work on it.
90 minutes a day. It doesn’t sound like much. Over the course of a year, it’s transformational.
Looking ahead
June brings more to work on and more to look forward to.
The structure work continues, the systems improvements are taking hold and the businesses keep moving forward.
May was a good month. Personally and professionally. And sometimes that’s exactly what you need to remind you why you do it.
Remember, hospitality never stands still… and neither can we.
Dan.
